VIES (VAT Information Exchange System) is the EU-wide platform used to check and validate VAT numbers.
If your VAT number appears in VIES, it means you are authorised to trade goods and services with EU companies.
If it does not appear, EU companies may not be allowed to trade with you.
In the past, some Italian tax offices calculated financial guarantees as a percentage of the VAT due – often around 7% of the VAT paid or estimated.
For non-EU and non-EEA companies applying for VAT and VIES registration through a Fiscal Representative from 2025 onward, the rules have changed: the Italian Revenue Agency now requires a fixed €50,000 guarantee issued by an approved financial institution or insurer.
